CHIM. Corps simple; gaz rare existant naturellement dans l'atmosphère terrestre, recueilli par distillation de l'air liquide utilisé dans l'éclairage par luminescence (symb. Kr). Ces verres modernes, dits stabilisés, trouvent encore des débouchés dans la fabrication des tubes luminescents contenant du krypton radio-actif (C. DUVAL, Verre, 1966, p. 113).

Travers : De ce qui précède nous pouvons conclure que l'atmosphère contient un gaz nouveau, doué d'un spectre caractéristique, plus lourd que l'argon et moins volatile que l'azote, l'oxygène et l'argon; le rapport de ses deux chaleurs spécifiques conduit à penser qu'il est monoatomique et représente un élément. Si cette conclusion est fondée, nous proposons de le nommer krypton, c'est-à-dire « caché »). Empr. au terme sav. angl. proposé en 1898 et formé sur le gr. « caché ».
